Bite Splint/Anti-Snoring Device

The pressures of modern life have led to an increase in cases of teeth grinding, also known as bruxism. Grinding can occur during the day or at night while you sleep, often without you even realising it.

Depending on its severity, bruxism can cause worn or damaged teeth, frequent headaches, and pain in the jaw joints (TMJ). Clenching and grinding place extra strain on the joints, which normally only rest during sleep. In fact, grinding at night can exert more than four times the normal biting pressure on your teeth.

If you experience jaw pain or clicking joints, it’s important to see a dentist. One of the most effective treatments is a custom-made splint or mouthguard, designed to provide a smooth biting surface and help relax your jaw while you sleep.

A bespoke appliance not only protects your teeth from wear but can also ease discomfort, relax your muscles, and reduce grinding over time. At Takapuna Dentists, we offer a range of tailored solutions to help manage teeth grinding and improve your comfort and sleep quality.

Do you or your loved one suffer from breathing difficulties during sleep such as snoring or obstructive sleep apnoea?

Did you know your dentist can help with snoring? Snoring often occurs when the muscles around the throat and tongue relax during sleep, narrowing the airway. As air passes through this restricted space, the tissues vibrate, creating the sound we recognise as snoring.

At Takapuna Dentists, we can provide a custom-made anti-snoring appliance (also known as a snoring mouthguard). Designed to fit comfortably over your teeth, it helps keep your airway open during sleep, reducing snoring and improving your quality of rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bite splint or anti-snoring device?

A bite splint is a custom-made dental appliance worn over the teeth to prevent teeth grinding or clenching, while an anti-snoring device is designed to keep the airway open during sleep, helping to reduce or eliminate snoring.

People who suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching), jaw pain, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, or frequent snoring and mild sleep apnoea can benefit from these devices.

Your dentist will take impressions of your teeth to create a custom-made device that fits comfortably and securely. This ensures maximum effectiveness and comfort while wearing it.

Clean the device daily using a soft brush and mild soap or as advised by your dentist. Avoid using hot water and always store it in its protective case when not in use.

It may take a few nights to adjust, but most people quickly become accustomed to wearing the device. Minor changes in speech may occur at first, but these usually resolve as you adapt. Many patients find they sleep better and wake up feeling more refreshed.
